NEWS AND SCHMOOZE | ELLEN FUTTERMAN
When Diane Katzman heard about the controversial report late last year that women don't need breast screenings until they reach age 50, it got her thinking. "If I had waited until I was 50, I may not even be here," explained Katzman, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 47. full story >
EDITORIAL | PROPOSITION A
We strongly encourage our readers to vote YES on the April 6 ballot initiative on the St. Louis County ballot, Proposition A, that asks voters to authorize a one-half of one percent sales tax increase for restoring and operating MetroBus, MetroLink and Call-A-Ride services. The Jewish Community Relations Council Board of Directors and its council of affiliated members have unanimously approved resolutions in support of the measure. full story >

Last week, Israel's Ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, was persistently interrupted and heckled as he gave a speech at the University of California-Irvine. full story >

How utterly striking is the contrast between the terror events of last Friday in Iraq and Pakistan, and the global efforts in support of ravaged Haiti. The battle between radical ideology- cum-anarchy, on the one hand, and benevolent humanitarianism, on the other, rages on. full story >

Pope Benedict XVI recently packed the Great Synagogue in Rome as he sought to mend fences with the world Jewish community over concerns about potential canonization of the controversial World War II Pope Pius XII. Did he succeed? Call it a mixed blessing, if you will. full story >

As a corporation that is afforded tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, the St. Louis Jewish Light is prohibited from endorsing or opposing a candidate for public office. So if someone runs, for instance, on an anti-Israel platform, we can't recommend that you vote against him. full story >
LOCAL COMMENTARY | DONN RUBIN
It has been one year since Israel's Cast Lead operation into Gaza. During this time, what has been largely ignored is the cause of the war and that the operation was an exercise of Israel's legitimate right to defend itself from terror. Instead, we have witnessed a barrage of slanderous charges of "war crimes" and outrageous comparisons of Israel to apartheid South Africa and even Nazi Germany. This has played out most directly in at least three ways: The Goldstone Report, the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaigns, and most recently the "Gaza Freedom March." full story >
LOCAL COMMENTARY | DAVID RUBIN
Last year, the United Nations Human Rights Council commissioned and then endorsed a report condemning Israel for alleged violations of international law during its successful Gaza campaign. The author, Judge Richard Goldstone, is an expert in International Law and Human Rights, having "cut his teeth" both in Yugoslavia and in the Post-Apartheid years of South Africa. The UN's determination to condemn Israel while saying little about Hamas should come as no surprise. It's anti-Israel bias is legendary. But that's not the end of the story. Logic tells us there must be another side. full story >
EDITORIAL | A CALL TO ACTION
"Do not stand idly by while your neighbor bleeds," the familiar biblical injunction mandates when fellow humans are in extreme distress. The devastating earthquake in Haiti, measuring 7.0 on the Richter Scale, which struck with what Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called "biblical" fury, cries out to Jews and people of all faiths and creeds to respond charitably to this disaster. full story >

How would you feel if you had picked up a newspaper in 2007 and read this account: Five assailants believed to be white supremacists assaulted a black woman and a U.S. Army soldier Sunday for sitting next to each other on a bus bound for Birmingham, Ala. full story >

Barry Rosenberg's excellent commentary, "Toward Thriving" (St. Louis Jewish Light, Sept. 23, 2009), outlines a vision for the future of St. Louis and American Jewish life, which I share. I write to emphasize the importance of vibrant community relations between the Jewish and larger communities to achieving that vision. full story >
