Sam Fox, a former U.S. ambassador and prominent philanthropist in the St. Louis Jewish community, told the St. Louis Jewish Light in a statement that Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens should resign in the wake of allegations that he was abusive to a woman he had an affair with in 2015.
“The Governor is a disgrace to the Republican Party, to the State of Missouri, and to himself," Fox, who is the immediate past chairman of the Republican Jewish Committee and served as the ambassador to Belgium, stated in an email. "He should resign.”
Fox joins a chorus of Republican leaders who have called on Greitens, who is Jewish, to resign. On Wednesday, a Missouri House committee, led by Republicans, released a report containing allegations that Greitens had hit the woman and forced himself on her during their affair.
The governor, who described the committee's investigation as a "political witch hunt," also faces an upcoming trial on a felony invasion-of-privacy charge for allegedly taking a nonconsensual partially-nude photo of the woman, who was not named in the committee report.
The governor, who grew up in St. Louis, has said he will be proven innocent during the trial, which is set to begin May 14.
Matt Brooks, the executive director of the Republican Jewish Committee, did not respond to requests for comment. Following the initial allegations against Greitens in January regarding the photo, the RJC released a statement describing Greitens as "family."
