WU Students gather at Hillel after the shooting at Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh

Hillel to host vigil, discussion in commemoration of Pittsburgh shooting

Hillel at Washington University will host a vigil and program in memory of the victims of the Tree of Life synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28 in the Women’s Building Formal Lounge.

A candle lighting will be followed by a panel discussion on gun violence prevention, featuring Dr. Jessica Gold, an assistant professor of psychiatry at Wash U; Stacey Newman, executive director of ProgressWomen and former Missouri state representative; and Gail Wechsler, interfaith outreach lead for Moms Demand Action.  The panel will be moderated by Sawyer Franklin, a former intern with the Gun Violence Initiative at the university’s Institute for Public Health.

The program is free and open to the public; a light reception will follow.  The event is underwritten in part by WashU Hillel’s George Roffman Memorial Fund, in memory of George Roffman, who lost his life to a brain tumor in 2001 during his time as a student at Wash U.  Roffman served as a student member on WashU Hillel’s Board of Directors and was active in Hillel’s community service efforts.
